What is a Barcode?
Everything you need to know about how barcodes work.
At its core, a barcode is a machine-readable representation of data. It acts as an optical "license plate" that links a physical object to a digital database.
How Do Barcodes Work?
A traditional 1D barcode is essentially a visual translation of numbers and letters. It uses a sequence of vertical black bars and white spaces of varying widths.
When a scanner (like a laser scanner at a grocery store or your smartphone camera) reads the barcode:
- It sweeps light across the symbol.
- The dark bars absorb light, while the white spaces reflect it back.
- A sensor translates these light/dark patterns into electrical signals.
- The scanner's decoder converts those signals back into text or numbers.
Importantly, the barcode itself rarely contains descriptive information (like "Blue Shirt, Size L, $15.99"). Instead, it usually contains a unique identifier (like "123456789"). The computer system receives that ID, looks it up in a database, and retrieves the associated information.
The Anatomy of a Barcode
Most barcodes share a similar structure:
- Quiet Zone: A blank margin on either end of the barcode that tells the scanner where the code begins and ends.
- Start/Stop Characters: Specific bar patterns that indicate the start and end of the data.
- Data Characters: The bars representing the actual information.
- Check Digit: A mathematical calculation based on the preceding digits, used to verify the code was read correctly.
Why Are Barcodes Important?
Before barcodes, cashiers had to manually type in prices, and inventory was counted by hand—a slow process prone to human error. Barcodes revolutionized industries by providing:
- Speed: Scanning an item takes a fraction of a second.
- Accuracy: The error rate for manual data entry is roughly 1 in 300 keystrokes. For barcode scanners, it's closer to 1 in 3 million.
